KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has strongly criticized the disproportionate allocation of federal resources, stating that funds generated by Karachi must not be diverted to develop Lahore. Addressing the media in Karachi, Wahab emphasized that policymakers must expand their vision beyond the GT Road corridor, pointing out that allocating 450 billion rupees exclusively to the Bahawalpur motorway project reflects an unfair distribution of national infrastructure funds. While clarifying that he harbors no animosity toward Lahore’s development, he insisted on equitable resource distribution for Sindh.
On the administrative and infrastructural fronts, the Mayor highlighted several key initiatives. Regarding water management, he noted that despite Sindh constructing new canals independently, the federal government has failed to release the province’s rightful water share, prompting authorities to register over 200 FIRs against water theft in the past two years to combat scarcity. Concurrently, work has officially commenced on the 17 billion rupee K-4 augmentation plan, with operations currently focused on four critical areas to address immediate urban water needs. Addressing political opposition and threats of a no-confidence motion, Wahab dismissed the move entirely, vowing to work tirelessly for the city for as long as he remains the elected Mayor of Karachi.
