KARACHI: Former Sindh Assembly member Ghulam Rasool Unar has fallen victim to an artificial intelligence deception, leading him to file a legal petition in the Additional District and Sessions Court (South) seeking a formal case against a woman he married online.
According to the petitioner’s counsel, Aamir Nawaz Warraich, Mr. Unar interacted with the woman on social media and married her via video call on February 23, 2026, after she consistently shared AI-generated images whenever asked to reveal her true appearance. Even during the virtual marriage ceremony, the bride kept her face veiled. Upon meeting in person afterward, the former lawmaker discovered a drastic difference in her actual appearance compared to the AI-generated photos.
Although distance was maintained following the realization, the marriage technically persisted. The situation escalated when the woman allegedly posted fake images and announcements of the petitioner’s death on social media. This prompted Mr. Unar to pronounce divorce on August 2. Following the separation, the woman reportedly began extorting him for millions of rupees, issuing severe threats to his life, and prompting a formal complaint with the National Cyber Crime Investigation (NCCI).
In response to the petition, the court has issued notices to the SP Complaint Cell and the SHO Defense, demanding a thorough police report by August 17.
