KARACHI: The son of a man who tragically lost his life in a road accident caused by inadequate safety measures during the Karachi Red Line BRT construction has filed a lawsuit demanding over Rs. 170 million in damages, holding the Sindh Government, Malir Cantonment Board, the Red Line Project Director, and contractors accountable for negligence. The fatal incident occurred late at night in January near Jinnah Avenue, where the victim’s vehicle collided with an unlit, unmarked concrete barrier placed in the middle of the road for the Red Line project, resulting in the death of the family’s sole breadwinner and injuries to his wife and child. Advocate Usman Farooq filed the compensation claim amounting to Rs. 172.12 million before the Senior Civil Judge Malir, citing severe lapses in safety—such as the complete absence of warning signs, reflectors, and street lighting that rendered the obstacles invisible—and arguing that project authorities failed in their fundamental duty to provide safe passage for commuters.
