Karachi Matric Board Delays Science Results for 48 Hours Amid ‘Super Checking’

KARACHI: The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has temporarily halted the announcement of the Matric Science results for 48 hours to conduct a rigorous, high-level quality assurance process termed “Super Checking.” This emergency scrutiny was triggered after initial data revealed an unprecedented spike in top tiers, showing that nearly 86,000 students secured A-1 and A grades out of the total 175,000 who appeared for the exams. Board authorities suspect this unusual inflation in top grades is linked to rampant cheating and the frequent changing of examination centers during the session. To eliminate any doubts regarding the credibility of the results, Acting Chairman BSEK, Musharaf Rajput, confirmed that the scrutiny has been handed over to reputable, independent teachers instead of regular board staff, who are now manually cross-referencing compiled digital data with physical award sheets and auditing the actual answer scripts of high-achieving students.

Adding to the complexity, the board’s highly anticipated transition to a digital “E-Marking” system for 10th-grade Mathematics and Computer Science largely failed due to severe infrastructural constraints, including a lack of software testing and delays in purchasing required servers. A trial E-marking conducted on 62,000 Computer Science papers exposed a staggering 35% variation in marks compared to traditional evaluation, forcing BSEK to scrap the digital results and revert entirely to manual checking for the final release. This administrative chaos unfolds in the wake of a provincial government inquiry into board malpractices; however, despite recommendations to terminate the Controller of Examinations and penalize involved officers following the sudden resignation of the former Chairman, formal accountability remains heavily stalled with only four minor show-cause notices issued so far.
