KARACHI: In a fresh blow to inflation-weary consumers, electricity prices have been hiked across Pakistan, including Karachi, following a notification issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
According to the official notification, NEPRA has approved an increase of Rs1.19 per unit on account of the Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) for April 2026. This additional amount will be recovered from consumers in their June 2026 billing cycle.
Key Highlights of the Notification
The tariff hike is applicable to consumers of K-Electric (KE) as well as all former WAPDA Distribution Companies (Discos). Regarding the calculation, NEPRA stated that the national average fuel charge component was initially set at Rs8.2 per unit. However, the actual fuel cost for April 2026 stood at Rs9.4 per unit, necessitating the Rs1.19 per unit adjustment. The recovery is scheduled for the current month. However, if the June bills have already been dispatched, the extra charges will be added to the subsequent month’s bills. Furthermore, the fuel adjustment will also apply to units consumed under the Incremental Consumption Package, calculated based on electricity used in April.
Who is Exempted?
In a minor relief, NEPRA has exempted certain categories from this price hike. The additional charges will not apply to Lifeline consumers (low-income residential consumers with minimal usage), Prepaid consumers, and Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations.
