KARACHI: Despite explicit announcements by the Sindh College Education Department, admissions for intermediate first-year classes in government colleges across Karachi have failed to commence, leaving at least 125,000 students anxiously waiting.
The Background
According to details, the central admission process was scheduled to begin on June 1, based on the 9th-grade results. Advertisements regarding the schedule were published in national newspapers on May 23, setting the final deadline for registration forms as July 15.
Around 125,000 students secure admissions annually in Karachi’s government colleges under the Centralized Admission Policy (CAP). Admissions are offered across six distinct faculties, including Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical, Computer Science, Commerce, Humanities, and Home Economics.
The Digital Roadblock
The delay came to light when students, who recently appeared for their matriculation exams, attempted to access the official admission portal at www.seccap.dgcs.gos.pk to register. To their frustration, the online portal was completely non-functional.
Official Response
When contacted regarding the issue, Professor Zahid Rajper, the Director General (DG) of Colleges Sindh, confirmed the technical glitch.
“The portal is currently offline due to technical reasons. Our technical team is actively working to resolve the issue, and we are highly optimistic that the portal will be fully operational by Wednesday morning, allowing students to apply without further delay,” Prof. Rajper stated.
New Inclusion: Quota for Specially-Abled Students
The DG Colleges also highlighted a positive policy update for the current academic year, revealing that a dedicated “disabled quota” has been allocated across all government colleges. This initiative will enable specially-abled students to easily apply and secure admissions in colleges nearest to their residences.
