Sindh Govt Orders Hotels and Restaurants to Freeze Prices, Warns Fraudulent Travel Agencies

KARACHI: The Sindh Department of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities has officially directed private hotels and restaurants across the province to refrain from increasing rents and service charges, emphasizing the need for public relief amidst the current economic climate. According to a formal letter issued by the department, restaurants have been urged to avoid overbilling and ensure a reduction in service costs to facilitate the general public.

Crackdown on Fraudulent Travel Agencies

The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting of the Department of Tourist Services, chaired by the Provincial Minister for Culture and Tourism, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah. The Minister announced a zero-tolerance policy against travel agencies defrauding pilgrims. He stated that licenses of travel agencies found involved in fraudulent activities or failing to provide promised facilities to Umrah and Ziarat pilgrims will be revoked immediately, noting that several complaints had been received regarding companies abandoning pilgrims abroad.

Promoting Heritage Tourism and Training

In a move to boost local tourism and provide unique accommodation options, the meeting decided to utilize historic havelis and houses located near provincial highways. Tour operators have been encouraged to use these sites for tourist stays, allowing visitors to connect with Sindh’s rich history and culture.

Regarding professional standards, staff at these heritage sites will undergo training through PITHM (Pakistan Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management). Furthermore, instructions were issued to modernize the registration system for tour operators to improve efficiency. Minister Zulfiqar Ali Shah reiterated that these steps are part of an austerity campaign aimed at providing direct financial relief to the citizens while making historic buildings functional for a peaceful and culturally immersive experience.
