Rising from the Ashes: Gul Plaza Traders Resume Business at Karachi Expo Centre

KARACHI – In a significant move to revive the livelihoods of those affected by the devastating Gul Plaza fire, a massive temporary marketplace has officially opened its doors at the Karachi Expo Centre. Following the fire that gutted over 1,000 shops and resulted in losses worth billions of rupees, traders have found a “ray of hope” as commercial activities commenced at the new venue today.

Key Details of the New Setup

Three major halls at the Expo Centre have been dedicated to the displaced shopkeepers, where approximately 500 stalls are being established. To manage administrative and operational expenses, a fee of Rs. 25,000 is being charged per stall. This initiative is a result of close collaboration between the Sindh Government and the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that Karachi’s economic cycle continues and affected families find a way to earn their livelihood.

Why the Expo Centre?

Previously, traders were offered space at the Polo Ground, but many hesitant shopkeepers raised concerns about the open-air environment and security. The Expo Centre provides a secure, roofed facility, which has encouraged many to set up their stalls and prepare for customers.

“We are trying to stand on our own feet again through these temporary stalls,” shared a group of shopkeepers who lost their entire inventory to the blaze.

This arrangement serves as a vital bridge for the affected traders while the original Gul Plaza site undergoes restoration.
