KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly has rejected a resolution seeking a complete ban on the sale of alcohol and the cancellation of all existing liquor shop licenses across the province.
The resolution, moved by MQM-P lawmaker Anil Kumar, called for immediate legislative action to halt the trade of alcohol in Sindh. However, the provincial government opposed the move, leading to its eventual rejection by the house after a brief debate.
Addressing the assembly, Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar stated that a blanket ban on liquor shops would negatively impact various segments of society. He maintained that the government could not support the proposal at this time, citing social complexities.
Heated Debate over JI Protest and Arrests
The session also witnessed a tense exchange regarding the recent crackdown on Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) protesters. JI member Farooq Farhan raised a point of objection, alleging that police dismantled their camp and seized their sound system ahead of a scheduled press conference at the Provincial Election Commission office. “I was forcibly detained and manhandled by the police,” Farooq claimed, adding that while he does not blame the police officers who follow orders, the house must know who authorized the action.
Government’s Stance on Road Blockades
In response, Home Minister Lanjar confirmed that an inquiry into Farooq’s arrest is underway and promised action against those responsible. However, he criticized the JI leadership for blocking Shahrah-e-Faisal, one of Karachi’s main arteries. The Minister reminded the house that there are clear court orders to register terrorism cases against those who block main roads. He further alleged that JI workers had stormed a police station and even occupied the SHO’s chair, calling such behavior unbecoming of responsible citizens.
