KARACHI: In a significant administrative reshuffle, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police for Traffic, Pir Muhammad Shah, has been removed from his post. According to a formal notification, Mazhar Nawaz Sheikh has been appointed as the new DIG Traffic Karachi.
The Reason Behind the Removal
Sources indicate that the decision follows the recent fire tragedy at Gul Plaza, where the traffic management system reportedly collapsed. The resulting gridlock in the surrounding areas caused severe delays, not only for the public but also for emergency services.
The operational failure was particularly evident as the traffic congestion hindered fire brigade engines from reaching the site promptly, complicating rescue operations. Following reports of mismanagement during the crisis, the provincial authorities decided to replace the top traffic official to ensure better accountability.
The newly appointed Mazhar Nawaz Sheikh has been directed to take charge immediately to streamline the city’s flow and prevent similar bottlenecks in the future. This move is seen as a direct response to the public and administrative outcry regarding Karachi’s fragile traffic infrastructure during emergencies.
