KARACHI – Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, stated on Tuesday that the provincial government is fully committed to the rehabilitation of those affected by the Gul Plaza tragedy, while strongly criticizing certain elements for attempting to gain political mileage from the incident. Speaking at the Sindh Assembly Media Corner, Memon shared details of the provincial cabinet meeting—the first since the tragedy—which began with prayers for the martyrs. He emphasized that while no amount of money can replace a human life, the government aims to support the grieving families and struggling businessmen during this difficult time.
Relief Measures and Compensation
The Sindh Cabinet has officially approved a comprehensive relief package for the victims. The families of the deceased will receive Rs. 1 crore (10 million) per person, while affected shopkeepers are to be provided Rs. 5 lakh (0.5 million) as immediate financial aid to restart their businesses. Furthermore, the government has approved providing alternative locations for displaced traders. Senior Minister Memon clarified that provincial ministers will personally and discreetly deliver compensation checks to the homes of the victims to respect their dignity and privacy.
High-Level Probe and Safety Audits
A five-member high-level committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, comprising the Senior Minister, Law Minister, Local Government Minister, and Labor Minister. This body will oversee the investigation and take action based on the findings. To prevent future disasters, a province-wide fire audit has been announced. Committees including the Building Control Authority, fire auditors, and assistant commissioners will inspect buildings across Sindh. A permanent mechanism is being developed to ensure fire safety compliance, especially in the congested “Old City” areas where such systems are currently lacking.
Addressing Political Allegations and Security
Responding to rumors regarding the security of MQM leaders, Memon dismissed them as baseless, stating that the Home Minister has confirmed no security was withdrawn from Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui or Mustafa Kamal. He lamented that negative politics began immediately after the Gul Plaza incident while families were still waiting for the bodies of their loved ones. Memon noted that a forensic team from Lahore has been summoned to ensure a transparent probe, and the government is open to forming a judicial commission or inviting international experts if necessary.
Public Order and Social Responsibility
Regarding public order, Memon stated that while protest is a democratic right, any attempt to force strikes or damage property will be met with strict legal action. Addressing a question about controversial media remarks by a TV anchor, he called for an internal inquiry by the relevant channel, reminding everyone that Sindh is the province that created Pakistan. He also dismissed the “negative politics” of the opposition, stating that the government’s focus remains on the protection and welfare of the citizens.
