KARACHI – In a major policy shift aimed at dismantling the “tanker culture,” Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) to phase out water supply through tankers and hydrants in favor of a direct pipeline system.
The Directives During a high-level meeting, the Mayor instructed officials to prepare an alternative distribution plan to ensure citizens receive water directly at their doorsteps through lines. He emphasized that all seven official hydrants currently operating in the city will be gradually closed.
Revenue vs. Public Interest Despite the fact that these hydrants generate Rs. 300 million in monthly revenue for the corporation, the Mayor maintained that public convenience outweighs financial gains. “The contracts for these hydrants expired last year, and we will not be issuing new ones. It is time to rid the citizens of the tanker system,” Wahab stated.
Proposed Solution To manage the city’s water shortage without tankers, the administration plans to implement an “alternate-day” supply schedule for every neighborhood. The Mayor asserted that tanker supply is not a sustainable solution and has long been a source of hardship and exploitation for the residents of the provincial capital.
