Combatting Climate Change: Sindh Govt Partners with Indus Biochar for Sustainable Farming

KARACHI: In a major push toward climate resilience and agricultural revival, the Sindh Government is planning to introduce Biochar technology to over 350,000 farmers registered under the Benazir Hari Card scheme. A high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Agriculture Minister Sardar Muhammad Bux Mahar—alongside key provincial ministers, agricultural secretaries, representatives from the Sindh Abadgar Board, and experts from Indus Biochar and LandIQ—focused on strategies to rehabilitate degraded lands and build a sustainable farming ecosystem across the province.

Biochar, an organic soil conditioner derived from agricultural waste and organic matter, is at the core of this initiative. By integrating Biochar into local farming practices, the government aims to enhance soil fertility, improve water retention capacity, reduce farmers’ reliance on expensive chemical fertilizers, and safeguard crops against extreme heatwaves and severe climate shifts.

Beyond soil restoration, the initiative also addresses critical water management challenges through technological partnerships. Experts from LandIQ presented advanced solutions for groundwater recharge and efficient water conservation, alongside strategies to prevent seawater intrusion in coastal agricultural areas. Minister Mahar emphasized that public-private partnerships are indispensable for modernizing Sindh’s agricultural sector and driving long-term food security and sustainability.
