Sahir Ali Bagga Calls for Ban on Indian Music in Pakistan, Demands Reciprocity

KARACHI – Renowned Pakistani singer and composer Sahir Ali Bagga has reignited the debate surrounding the local music industry by demanding a ban on Indian content in Pakistan, calling for “equality” in bilateral cultural exchanges. In a recent interview, Bagga expressed his concerns over the one-sided nature of content consumption between the two neighbors. He pointed out that whenever tensions arise, India is quick to impose restrictions on Pakistani artists and their work.

Bagga noted that while Pakistani music—specifically on streaming platforms like Spotify—faces restrictions or shadow bans in India, Indian music continues to be played and promoted freely across Pakistan. The singer argued that if Indian platforms and the government are limiting the reach of Pakistani music, Pakistan should respond in kind, stating that decisions must be made on the basis of equality.

He emphasized that such measures are essential to promote and respect the local music industry, providing Pakistani artists with the recognition and opportunities they deserve. Bagga maintained that since India initiated these cultural restrictions, it is now time for the Pakistani public and the government to stand by their own industry to strengthen the national musical identity.

“To empower our local industry and give it the respect it deserves, we must respond to these restrictions with a firm stance,” Bagga added during the interview.

The singer’s comments have sparked a fresh wave of discussion on social media, with fans and industry experts divided on whether a cultural ban is the right way forward for the growth of Pakistani music.
