KARACHI: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has reserved its judgment on two acquittal pleas filed by former Sindh Home Advisor Waseem Akhtar in connection with the May 12, 2007 tragedy, with the final decision expected to be announced on July 25. During the proceedings held at the Karachi Central Jail ATC Complex, Waseem Akhtar and other co-accused appeared before the court, where defense counsel Mushtaq Ahmed and the special prosecutor concluded their arguments.
The court expressed severe displeasure over the prosecution’s failure to present the necessary case property and issued a final ultimatum to the Investigation Officer, warning that the trial would proceed without it if the evidence is not produced by the next hearing. These high-profile cases stem from the 2007 violence in Karachi, where Waseem Akhtar is accused of instigating party workers into rioting and firing, an incident that tragically resulted in over 50 fatalities and numerous injuries.
