KARACHI: The Search Committee for the appointment of Vice Chancellors in Sindh’s public universities has officially summoned shortlisted candidates for interviews to select the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi (KU). The interview process is scheduled to kick off on July 9 and will continue across July 10, 13, and 14. Official call letters are already being dispatched to the applicants.
Shortlisted Candidates & Potential Bureaucratic Shift Out of a total of 52 applicants, the committee has shortlisted 46 candidates for the final interview phase. The pool includes high-profile academic figures such as the incumbent VC Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, alongside dozens of prominent professors and scholars like Dr. Waseem Qazi, Dr. Shaista Tabassum, and Dr. Zia Al-Qayyum, among others. Interestingly, reports suggest that certain influential quarters are pushing to see a bureaucrat appointed to the top university slot rather than a traditional academician.
The Transitional Period The four-year tenure of the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, is set to expire on July 28. Since the appointment of a permanent VC is unlikely to be finalized before his departure date, expectations are that the interim charge of the university will temporarily be handed back to Dr. Iraqi. However, the race for this temporary leadership remains fierce, with several internal and external contenders actively vying for the interim slot.
