KU Teachers, Staff Call Off Month-Long Exam Boycott After Sindh Govt Forms Grievance Committee

KARACHI: In a major relief for thousands of students, the Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS) and non-teaching staff associations have agreed to end their month-long boycott of examinations and academic activities.

The breakthrough comes after the Government of Sindh constituted a high-powered committee to address the long-standing financial and administrative grievances of the university’s employees. A formal notification in this regard has been issued by Noman Ahsan, Secretary of the Sindh Higher Education Commission (SHEC).

Following this development, the exam boycott is expected to end immediately, despite the fact that key demands—such as the release of house ceiling allowances and leave encashment—have not yet been fulfilled.

Key Terms of the Agreement

The high-powered committee will be officially convened by the Chairman of the Sindh Higher Education Commission. Its members include the Secretary of Universities and Boards, the Secretary of SHEC, KUTS President Ghufran Alam, Employees Welfare Association President Zahid Baloch, and Officers Welfare Association President Faisal Hashmi. Under its terms of reference, the committee has been tasked to review all rules, policies, financial implications, and administrative matters regarding the employees’ grievances, and it must submit its final recommendations within a strict 40-day deadline.

Rescheduling of Exams

According to the official notification, representatives from KUTS, the Employees Welfare Association, and the Officers Welfare Association mutually agreed to call off the strike immediately during a high-level meeting held at the SHEC office.

“The University of Karachi administration will now make the necessary arrangements to reschedule the disrupted examinations. A revised examination schedule will be announced officially in due course,” the notification stated.
