KARACHI – The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has issued a high alert for citizens, announcing a massive water suspension across several districts starting tomorrow, April 25.
The Details
The suspension is due to essential infrastructure work under the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP). Engineers will be interconnecting the newly laid Transmission Line No. 5 at the Dhabeji Pumping Station. The work will start on Saturday, April 25 at 12:00 PM and is expected to last for 48 hours until April 27, causing a massive shortfall of 250 million gallons per day (MGD).
Affected Areas
During the maintenance, the Fourth Phase, K-II, and K-III systems will be completely shut down. Residents in North Karachi, Surjani Town, Scheme 33, and Gulistan-e-Jauhar will be directly affected. Furthermore, various parts of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar, and Chanesar Town will also face a complete suspension of supply.
Technical Breakdown
According to the KWSC spokesperson, 9 out of 21 pumps at Dhabeji will be powered down. While 7 pumps are expected to resume by April 27, two pumps will remain offline for an additional 5 days to complete technical adjustments. It is also important to note that water hydrants at NIPA, Safoora, and Sakhi Hassan will remain closed during this period.
Official Advice
The Water Corporation maintains that this upgrade is crucial for stabilizing system pressure and improving future distribution. “We advise all citizens to store water in advance and use it with extreme care to avoid any inconvenience during these 48 hours,” the KWSC statement added.
