Karachi to Upgrade to International Standard Smart Traffic Signals

KARACHI – In a major move to modernize the city’s infrastructure, Mayor Murtaza Wahab has announced the transition of Karachi’s traffic signaling system to international standards.

The Smart Signal Initiative

According to Mayor Wahab, Smart Traffic Signals will be installed across major arteries to regulate the flow of vehicles more effectively. The Municipal Commissioner has been directed to immediately initiate the procurement process for these high-tech systems.

The project will be executed in phases: Phase 1: The Red Zone and I.I. Chundrigar Road will be developed as model zones. Phase 2: Implementation will expand to M.A. Jinnah Road and subsequently to other key corridors across the city.

“Implementing traffic laws alongside infrastructure development is crucial. If we regulate traffic effectively, half of the city’s problems will resolve themselves,” the Mayor stated.

Addressing Water Scarcity and Billing

Beyond traffic, the Mayor highlighted that water supply remains Karachi’s most significant challenge. To tackle this, the Sindh Government, in collaboration with the World Bank, has launched the Karachi Water Improvement Services Project.

To resolve long-standing billing and distribution issues, a new metering system has been introduced: Bulk Flow Meters: In the first phase, 43 large meters are being installed in various areas to accurately measure water distribution. Data Collection: This initiative aims to ensure transparency in billing and identify gaps in the supply chain.
