KARACHI: In a significant administrative move, the Sindh Cabinet has officially approved the inclusion of the Lyari River within the jurisdiction of the Town Municipal Corporation (TMC) Lyari. The decision was reached during a provincial cabinet meeting following a formal request from TMC Lyari. The transition marks a shift in municipal oversight, as the river area was previously under the control of TMC Mauripur (Moriro Mirbahar).
Key Highlights of the Transition: The transfer was initiated under the Sindh Local Government Act 2013. Before finalizing the move, the Regional Director of the Local Government Department invited public objections through newspapers. No grievances or objections were filed within the mandatory 15-day period. A thorough physical survey was conducted from Zero Point to Bakra Piri. The briefing confirmed that there is no residential population in the specific belt being transferred. TMC Mauripur expressed no objection to the change in boundaries, clearing the way for the unanimous approval by the cabinet.
What This Means for Lyari By bringing the river stretch under TMC Lyari’s umbrella, the local corporation will now be responsible for the maintenance, development, and sanitation efforts related to this corridor. This move is expected to streamline administrative tasks and improve localized governance for the Lyari River belt.
