Justice Maqbool Baqar Convoy Attack: ATC Adjourns Hearing Till May 5

KARACHI: A Special Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) adjourned the hearing of the high-profile case involving the 2013 attack on the convoy of former Supreme Court Justice Maqbool Baqar, after prison authorities produced suspects linked to a banned outfit.

Court Proceedings The hearing took place at the Anti-Terrorism Court complex within the Karachi Central Jail. Jail officials presented three suspects identified as Masoom alias Billa, Yasir, and Muawiyah who are allegedly associated with a proscribed organization.

During the proceedings, the counsel for Justice (R) Maqbool Baqar requested the court for complete certified copies of the case documents. The public prosecutor informed the court that the request for these certified copies had been processed through the Prosecutor General’s office.

Next Steps The court, after hearing the arguments, adjourned the session until May 5. The statements of the former Justice and the Investigating Officer (IO) are yet to be recorded in the upcoming hearings.

Background of the Case According to the prosecution, the brutal attack occurred in June 2013 when Justice Maqbool Baqar was en route to the Sindh High Court. The explosion claimed the lives of seven individuals, including security personnel assigned to the Justice’s detail. Justice Baqar and several others sustained critical injuries in the assassination attempt, while one of the attackers was also killed during the incident.
