KARACHI: The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has officially entered a new phase of operational excellence as National Dredging and Marine Services (NDMS) commenced a landmark dredging operation at the port.
According to the KPT management, this project marks a historic first, with four major dredgers working simultaneously for a continuous period of four months. The primary goal is to deepen the berths at the South Asia Pakistan Terminal (SAPT), as well as the Upper and Lower Harbors, to facilitate the handling of giant vessels.
Key Highlights of the Operation: For the first time, four specialized dredgers—Rotterdam, Athena, Abul, and Indus Dolphin—are operating at once. The increased depth will allow the port to accommodate Panamax-class vessels, significantly boosting cargo capacity. This project is set to strengthen Karachi Port’s position as a premier regional transit and transshipment hub.
The administration highlighted that these upgrades are essential for improving maritime trade efficiency and providing world-class facilities to international business partners.
