Gul Plaza Tragedy: Sindh Govt Provides Free Alternative Spaces and Rs. 7 Billion Compensation for Victims

KARACHI: Sindh Local Government Minister, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, has announced that victims of the Gul Plaza tragedy are being provided with free alternative business spaces across various locations in the city to ensure they can resume their livelihoods without delay. Accompanied by Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the Minister visited Bagh-e-Jinnah to inspect the rehabilitation efforts and temporary business arrangements. During a briefing at Baradari, officials detailed the setup of temporary stalls and facilities designed for the affected shopkeepers.

Regarding financial relief, the Minister shared that with the Chief Minister’s approval, the distribution of an initial compensation package worth Rs. 7 billion is underway, while victims are also receiving temporary financial assistance of up to Rs. 500,000 per month. Mayor Murtaza Wahab confirmed that approximately 350 affected shopkeepers will be handed over stalls in the first phase to ensure business continuity ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

The Minister also emphasized that special teams have been formed to enforce fire safety protocols in plazas and markets. Building owners have been strictly directed to ensure the availability of functional fire extinguishers, the clearance of emergency exits, and strict adherence to safety regulations. Non-compliance will result in legal responsibility being pinned on the respective management and owners.

Mayor Wahab further stated that fool-proof arrangements have been finalized at the new sites, including parking, basement facilities, and the deployment of police and wardens for security. The registration of affected traders was conducted in collaboration with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce (KCCI).
