Nipah Virus Outbreak in India Casts Shadow Over T20 World Cup 2026

MUMBAI: The upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to kick off on February 7, faces major uncertainty as cases of the deadly Nipah Virus have surfaced in India. The emergence of this virus has raised serious questions about the feasibility of hosting the mega event as planned.

Health authorities in the state of West Bengal have confirmed 5 cases of the virus so far, with the condition of the infected patients reported to be critical. Furthermore, over 100 individuals have been placed in immediate quarantine as precautionary measures and health protocols are significantly tightened across the region.

The outbreak has caused significant disruption to the preparations, logistics, and travel arrangements for the tournament. Medical experts warn that if the intensity of the virus continues to increase, the overall schedule of the T20 World Cup could be severely affected. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and local organizers are reportedly monitoring the situation closely to assess the safety of players and spectators.
