KARACHI – In a major move to overhaul the crumbling infrastructure of the provincial capital, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has approved a massive funding package of Rs. 21.53 billion. The funds are specifically earmarked for the restoration of roads, sewage systems, and street lighting across the city.
The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by the CM and attended by Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, and Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah.
Breakdown of the Development Package:
- Special Road Grant: Rs. 13 billion has been allocated for the immediate rehabilitation of Karachi’s road network.
- Large Scale Repairs: Repair work (patchwork) will be carried out on 400 roads across 7 districts, while 9 major roads will undergo complete reconstruction.
- KMC Projects: The CM directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to restore 26 major arteries.
- Municipal Support: Financial aid has been approved for all 24 Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs) to ensure grassroots development.
- Infrastructure & Utilities: Rs. 8.53 billion is dedicated to projects involving drains and streetlights, while Rs. 12.57 billion will cover the combined cost of roads, sewerage, and water supply schemes.
Focus on Quality and Speed
During the meeting, Mayor Murtaza Wahab briefed the Chief Minister on 409 dilapidated locations requiring urgent attention. CM Murad Ali Shah emphasized that public convenience and safety are the government’s top priorities. He issued strict directives to the Finance Department for the immediate release of funds and instructed officials to ensure transparency and high-quality work within the stipulated deadlines.
“The restoration of Karachi’s roads will not only ease the daily commute for citizens but also provide a significant boost to economic activities,” stated the Chief Minister.
