KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted a spell of thunderstorms and rain for the provincial capital next week, as a weak westerly wave is expected to enter the country today.

According to the Early Warning Center of the PMD, Karachi is likely to experience rain accompanied by thunder on January 22 and 23. This weather shift is attributed to the influence of the incoming westerly system combined with southwesterly winds already blowing in the city.

Current Weather and Humidity

The city has already started experiencing chilly weather with light cloud cover.

  • Humidity: Recorded at a high of 87% today.
  • Temperature: The minimum temperature was recorded at 13°C, while the maximum is expected to reach 28°C. From tomorrow, the minimum temperature is projected to rise slightly to 14°C.

Fog Advisory and Visibility

Despite the slight decrease in the intensity of the cold wave over the past few days, fog remains a significant concern.

  • The Met Office warned that dense fog is likely to prevail during morning hours on Saturday and Sunday, which may severely impact visibility.
  • This follows a major foggy spell yesterday where humidity hit 95%, causing massive disruptions, delays, and cancellations of domestic and international flights at Karachi Airport.

Wind Patterns

For the next three days, the city is expected to experience northeasterly winds in the mornings, transitioning to pleasant southwesterly sea breezes in the afternoons. However, cold and chilly conditions will persist during the nights and early mornings.
