Pakistan’s First Fishing Technology Museum and ‘Mahi Dost’ App Launched in Karachi

KARACHI: In a landmark move for the maritime sector, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry inaugurated Pakistan’s first-ever Fishing Technology Museum on Monday. The event also featured the soft launch of the ‘Mahi Dost’ digital traceability application, both aimed at modernizing fisheries management and boosting national exports.

A Hub for Heritage and Research

Located in Karachi, the new museum documents the historical evolution of fishing—from traditional artisanal techniques to cutting-edge modern technologies. The Minister described the facility as a national center for research, learning, and policy development, designed to preserve the cultural heritage of coastal communities while embracing industrial modernization.

Tech-Driven Fisheries Management

During his address to fishermen, academics, and business leaders, Minister Chaudhry highlighted the integration of advanced tools:

  • Modern Equipment: The use of AI-enabled sonar systems and eco-friendly nets to combat overfishing and climate risks.
  • Combatting IUU Fishing: Utilizing museum archives and research to implement evidence-based reforms against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.
  • Marine Science: Training the next generation of marine scientists and fisheries managers through the museum’s resources.

The ‘Mahi Dost’ App: Boosting Exports

The newly launched Mahi Dost application introduces a “catch-to-consumer” tracking system powered by Blockchain and GPS technology.

  • Traceability: Fishermen can use QR codes to record data, ensuring compliance with EU Catch Certification and the US Marine Mammal Protection Act.
  • Economic Impact: By verifying “dolphin-safe” practices and increasing transparency, the app aims to grow Pakistan’s seafood exports beyond the current $500 million mark.
  • Market Access: Pilot projects have already reduced approval times for European markets, helping small-scale fishermen reach high-value international buyers.

Ferry Service Update

The Minister also announced that a Ferry Service Terminal will be soft-launched on January 8, marking the first time a private company has been licensed for ferry operations in Pakistan. He confirmed ongoing discussions with the ambassadors of Iran, Iraq, and Yemen to establish international ferry links.
