KARACHI – Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab stated on Saturday that the metropolis has historically been neglected due to “unwarranted criticism and prejudice.” He asserted that the city’s infrastructure and management have seen significant improvement since PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari took personal interest in the city’s affairs.
The Mayor made these remarks during a high-profile visit to the historic Hassan Ali Hothi Market, where he reviewed restoration efforts.
Restoration of Heritage: Hassan Ali Hothi Market
Speaking to the media, Mayor Wahab highlighted the cultural significance of the Hassan Ali Hothi Market, which has completed 100 years since its establishment.
The Mayor noted that despite its 100-year history, the market had fallen into a state of severe decay and disrepair over past decades.
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has officially taken up the task of restoring the historic site to its original glory.
As part of the rehabilitation, the Mayor confirmed that all illegal structures, platforms (chabutras), and encroachments surrounding the market have been removed to clear the space for public use.
Commitment to City Service
“Every worker of the Pakistan People’s Party is dedicated to serving Karachi,” Wahab said, emphasizing that the current administration is prioritizing the preservation of heritage sites alongside modern infrastructure.
He further added that removing illegal occupations from historic landmarks is a key part of the government’s strategy to reclaim the city’s public spaces.
