KARACHI: The Federal Government has initiated a comprehensive review of the Karachi Urban Infrastructure Project, with the total estimated cost now expected to exceed Rs. 15 billion. According to official documents, the project aims to overhaul the city’s aging utility and transport networks through hundreds of localized schemes. While the Sindh government had initially proposed an estimate of Rs. 10 billion in 2024, the revised plan reflects an increased scope to address the city’s growing needs.
Comprehensive Scope of Work
The project document outlines a massive scale of development including 504 small-scale water and sewerage schemes. The infrastructure work will focus on 158 schemes for metalled roads and 165 schemes dedicated to tuff-tiled streets to improve neighborhood accessibility. For waste management, 95 RCC sewerage line projects have been incorporated into the plan to upgrade the city’s drainage system.
Water Supply and Public Facilities
In terms of essential utilities, the package includes 45 water supply schemes and 4 underground water projects. A critical part of the plan involves the full rehabilitation and activation of 3 major pumping stations. Beyond basic utilities, the project also addresses social infrastructure by funding the renovation of 4 schools and various public parks, alongside the installation of 11 street lighting schemes. Sources indicate that formal approval for the revised funding is expected shortly, marking a significant federal investment in Karachi’s urban development.
