KARACHI – In a grim discovery following the devastating fire at Gul Plaza, rescue teams have recovered 30 additional bodies from a single crockery shop on the mezzanine floor, bringing the total death toll to 61.
The Search Operation
According to DIG South, Asad Raza, the search operation shifted focus after shopkeepers pointed out the presence of individuals on the mezzanine floor. The 30 victims had reportedly locked themselves inside a shop to escape the flames; their last mobile phone locations were also traced to the same spot. Debris removal has been temporarily halted to prioritize the recovery of remains.
Identification Challenges
The identification process remains a daunting task due to the intensity of the fire. Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed reported that most remains are fragmented, making DNA extraction time-consuming. The Sindh Forensic DNA Lab is working 24/7 to process samples, and so far, DNA samples have been collected from 51 families. While 6 to 7 bodies were recovered intact, others require forensic confirmation.
Missing Persons and Identification
The number of missing persons has reached 86 after the family of 65-year-old Jehangir Shah registered a report. Recently, three victims—15-year-old Maryam, 33-year-old Shahroz, and 26-year-old Rizwan—were identified through DNA testing by the CPLC and handed over to their families.
Rescue Hurdles
Rescue operations by 1122, Edhi, and Chhipa have been ongoing for over 40 hours. The process has been repeatedly hindered by secondary fires erupting from different parts of the building, making it difficult for personnel to navigate the debris safely.
