KARACHI: The Sindh government has launched a major crackdown on buildings violating fire safety regulations, ordering the immediate sealing of high-risk structures across the province. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah. The session, attended by the Secretary of Rehabilitation, DG PDMA, and various Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners, focused on the province-wide fire safety audit.
Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah informed the meeting that a total of 3,633 buildings were inspected, out of which 3,319 were issued notices for various safety deficiencies. Among these, 889 buildings have been officially categorized as high-risk.
The Chief Secretary emphasized that while medium and low-risk buildings have been issued directives to implement corrective measures, there will be zero tolerance for high-risk violators. “Strict legal action, including the immediate sealing of premises, has been ordered for high-risk buildings that fail to comply with safety standards,” he stated. This move is part of a broader provincial strategy to prevent fire-related tragedies and ensure the safety of residents in commercial and residential high-rises.
