KARACHI – The alarming surge in suicide cases across the metropolitan city continues, as a 21-year-old woman ended her life in Shah Faisal Colony on Monday, reportedly overwhelmed by domestic struggles.
The Incident The victim, identified as Maryam Tabassum, wife of Ahmed, was found dead in her residence near Abbasa Masjid, Shah Faisal Colony No. 5. According to police officials, Maryam was found hanging in her small, one-room house. She was a mother to a young child.
Motive and Investigation Initial police investigations suggest that the extreme step was taken due to mounting life pressures and domestic distress. “The victim lived in a cramped one-room house and was reportedly struggling with severe personal and financial anxieties,” a police spokesperson stated.
A Disturbing Trend This incident highlights a tragic trend in the city since the start of the new year. In just the first 12 days of 2024, six people—including three women—have reportedly committed suicide by hanging. Mental health experts and social activists are expressing deep concern over this spike, pointing toward rising economic pressure and lack of psychological support systems.
The body was shifted to a nearby hospital for medico-legal formalities before being handed over to the grieving family.
