NICVD Karachi Sets Global Milestone: Over 1.6 Million Patients Treated Free of Cost in 2025

KARACHI – The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) has cemented its position as a global leader in cardiac care, revealing that it provided free-of-charge treatment to more than 1.6 million patients during the year 2025.

According to the annual performance report released by the institute, NICVD Karachi continues to operate as the world’s largest center for free cardiac surgeries and primary angioplasty services, supported largely by the Government of Sindh.

Unprecedented Surgical & Life-Saving Interventions

The 2025 data showcases a massive scale of operations aimed at tackling heart disease in Pakistan:

  • Primary Angioplasties: 9,205 procedures performed to treat heart attacks in real-time.
  • Angiographies: Over 18,757 diagnostic procedures.
  • Open-Heart Surgeries: A total of 2,798 surgeries (1,567 adult and 1,231 paediatric).
  • Stroke Management: 66 stroke patients received timely interventions, preventing permanent disability.

High-Value Treatments Provided Free

One of the most significant highlights of the report is the performance of 41 TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) procedures. Despite each procedure costing approximately Rs 4 million, they were provided to patients entirely free of cost.

Additionally, the institute performed 3,149 paediatric interventions and implanted over 2,100 pacemakers (both temporary and permanent) throughout the year.

A National Lifeline

The report emphasizes that NICVD’s reach extends far beyond Karachi. In 2025, over 158,266 patients from other provinces traveled to Karachi to avail themselves of the free high-tech facilities, proving the institute’s role as a national lifeline.

“NICVD remains committed to ensuring that no patient is deprived of quality cardiac care due to financial constraints,” stated Executive Director Professor Tahir Saghir.

Prof. Saghir attributed these achievements to the unwavering support of the Sindh Government and noted that a new OPD block has already been inaugurated to accommodate the ever-increasing influx of patients.
