KARACHI – As a new weather system enters the country, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted a significant drop in temperature for Karachi, driven by cold winds originating from Siberia.
Cold Wave Hits Karachi
According to the Met Office, the intensity of winter has increased across the city. Chilly Siberian winds are expected to continue blowing throughout the day, maintaining a cold grip on the provincial capital. While the city might not see immediate rain, the wind chill factor will keep the weather notably cold.
National Rain and Snowfall Alert
On a national level, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a high alert effective from today until February 3rd. A new spell of rain and snowfall is expected to lash various parts of the country. Rain is predicted for Northern Balochistan and northern areas, while heavy snowfall is expected in the mountainous regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Regional Forecast and Landslide Warning
Between February 1st and 3rd, rain is forecast for Islamabad, the Pothohar region, and various districts of Punjab, including Murree and Galliyat. The PMD has specifically cautioned that the expected precipitation may trigger landslides in the mountainous terrains of Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. Consequently, the NDMA has directed all relevant departments to remain vigilant and ensure preemptive safety measures are in place to manage any emergencies during this period.
