KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has formally approved the acceleration of the Solid Waste Emergency and Efficiency Project (SWEEP). This initiative aims to overhaul Karachi’s waste management infrastructure, aligning it with modern environmental standards and climate sustainability. Chairing a high-level meeting at the CM House, Murad Ali Shah emphasized that SWEEP—a collaborative venture between the Sindh Government and the World Bank—is a cornerstone of the provincial vision to make Karachi a clean, green, and livable metropolis.
The meeting was attended by Local Government Minister Nasir Shah, Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, and other top officials. During the session, the CM highlighted that a primary goal of the project is to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and ensure compliance with both national and international environmental benchmarks. The project focuses on modernizing garbage collection, upgrading dump site safety, and rehabilitating reclaimed land to improve the city’s overall hygiene and aesthetics.
Furthermore, the CM noted that SWEEP is in direct alignment with Pakistan Vision 2025, which prioritizes urban pollution reduction and sustainable city development. He reiterated that the government is committed to providing a sustainable and livable environment through an integrated and comprehensive solid waste management system.
