Karachi Shivers as Temperatures Drop to Single Digits Following Heavy Rainfall

KARACHI: The provincial capital is experiencing an intense cold wave as icy winds from Balochistan gripped the city following yesterday’s heavy downpour. On Friday morning, temperatures in several parts of the city were recorded in the single digits, marking a significant seasonal shift.

Icy Winds from Quetta According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), north-westerly winds from Balochistan have gained intensity. Currently, cold winds from the Quetta direction are blowing at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, significantly increasing the chill factor across the metropolis.

Temperature Records The city’s minimum temperature dropped by 3 degrees Celsius compared to yesterday. While the official minimum temperature was recorded at 10.5°C, other weather stations across the city reported even lower figures. Bin Qasim emerged as the coldest area, with the mercury plunging to a freezing 7.4°C.

Rainfall Statistics The cold snap follows a spell of heavy rainfall that lashed the city. Surjani Town received the highest amount of rain at 26.3 mm. Other notable recordings include North Karachi with 20 mm, Gulshan-e-Maymar with 17.6 mm, Bahria Town Phase 5 with 14.2 mm, and Saadi Town with 10 mm.

Outlook for the Weekend Weather experts predict that this new cold wave is likely to persist until Sunday. During this period, the minimum temperature in Karachi is expected to further drop, potentially hitting a low of 7°C. Citizens are advised to take necessary precautions against the sudden and sharp decrease in temperature.
