Karachi: Sealing of Fire-Ravaged Gul Plaza Begins as Death Toll Hits 73

KARACHI – Authorities have initiated the process of sealing Gul Plaza on M.A. Jinnah Road, nine days after a devastating fire left the commercial hub in ruins. The building, which saw 40% of its structure collapse during the blaze, has been declared extremely hazardous.

Current On-Site Operations

KMC personnel have begun digging pits to install iron shuttering around the perimeter. To prevent public access and ensure safety, the entire structure will be covered with green plastic netting. Simultaneously, a technical team has arrived on-site to conduct a final structural assessment.

Casualties and Missing Persons

The scale of the tragedy continues to unfold with 73 confirmed deaths and 79 individuals still missing. Currently, 23 bodies have been identified, and families of 55 victims have provided DNA samples to assist in the identification process.

Official Statement from DC South

Speaking to the media, Deputy Commissioner South, Javed Nabi Khoso, stated that the search operation is nearing completion. He confirmed that most of the building has been cleared, with only one section remaining which is expected to be finished today. Following a detailed survey, the building will be officially sealed.
