High Drama in Sindh Assembly: MQM-P Representatives Reconcile After Shocking In-House Threats

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly turned into a scene of intense drama as Shaukat Rajput, an elected member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), accused a fellow party legislator of issuing life threats during the session. However, the high-voltage standoff eventually led to a surprising reconciliation between the two colleagues.

The Allegation The session took a startling turn when Shaukat Rajput, speaking on a point of order, claimed that he had been threatened by Shariq Jamal, an MPA belonging to the PSP-leaning faction within the party. “I was told, ‘Step outside and we will deal with you,'” Rajput informed the House. He further alleged that on the preceding Monday, MNA Iqbal Mehsud had forcibly entered his office with armed men.

Demands for Justice and Security Feeling vulnerable, Rajput requested the Speaker to direct the relevant police station to register an FIR and ensure his protection. He warned that if security was not provided, he would be forced to resign from the assembly and return to his legal practice.

Government and Speaker’s Response The Treasury benches took the matter seriously. Home Minister Zia Lanjar condemned the incident as “shameful” and termed the Speaker the custodian of the House. He offered to arrange immediate security for Rajput and warned of legal action against the accused if any harm befell the MPA. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon noted that while it appeared to be an internal party grouping issue, the sanctity of a member’s life must be protected. The Speaker of the Sindh Assembly issued a stern warning to Opposition Leader Ali Khurshidi to resolve the matter before the session’s end, threatening to suspend the membership of those involved.

Escalation and Suspensions During the heated debate, MQM-P member Engineer Usman was suspended from the House and barred from entry after the Speaker accused him of inciting noise and misconduct. The Speaker ruled that the suspension would remain in effect until a formal apology was submitted.

The Resolution The situation escalated to the point where senior police officials, including the SSP and SHO, arrived at the Sindh Assembly premises. However, the tension was defused following a meeting in the Speaker’s chamber. Sources confirm that both Shaukat Rajput and Shariq Jamal have settled their differences. Rajput is expected to formally “forgive” Jamal during the next session, and the suspension of Engineer Usman is likely to be revoked tomorrow following the truce.
