KARACHI – In a major move to upgrade the city’s crumbling infrastructure, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has approved a massive budget of Rs 21.53 billion for the restoration of roads, sewage systems, and street lighting across the provincial capital. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, attended by Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and other senior officials.
Breakdown of the Development Package
The funding is strategically divided to address various urban challenges. A special grant of Rs 13 billion has been allocated specifically for road repairs, covering patchwork on 400 roads across all seven districts and the complete reconstruction of 9 major arteries. Projects covering roads, sewerage, and water supply are estimated at Rs 12.57 billion, while an additional Rs 8.53 billion is earmarked for the restoration of 26 major roads, drains, and streetlights. Financial assistance has also been approved for all 24 Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs) to ensure grassroots development.
Commitment to Quality and Timely Completion
During the briefing, Mayor Murtaza Wahab identified 409 dilapidated roads in urgent need of repair. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah emphasized that improving Karachi’s road network is vital for smooth traffic flow and boosting economic activities. He stated that public convenience and urban safety remain the top priorities of the Sindh Government. The CM has directed the Finance Department to release the funds immediately, while issuing strict instructions to ensure transparency and high-quality standards in all projects.
