KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has stated that the landmark project to produce urea from coal is set to become a game changer for both Thar and the national economy. The Chief Minister made these remarks during a high-level meeting between the Sindh Government and Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC). The session was attended by FFC CEO Sarfaraz Ahmed Rehman along with other senior officials to discuss the roadmap for coal-based fertilizer production.
During the briefing, CM Murad Ali Shah highlighted the transformative potential of the project, noting that producing urea from local coal will significantly lower fertilizer prices and provide much-needed relief to the farming community. The project is expected to generate over 3,500 direct jobs and more than 7,000 indirect employment opportunities, boosting the local labor market. By reducing urea imports, the project will save precious foreign exchange and holds the potential to generate $260 million through exports. Furthermore, the Sindh Government is projected to receive approximately $5.5 million annually in royalties.
“This project is not just about industrial growth; it’s about self-reliance,” the Chief Minister added. He emphasized that utilizing Sindh’s indigenous coal reserves for urea production is a strategic move to stabilize the province’s economy and ensure food security for the country.
