KARACHI – Seven years after the high-profile double homicide of TV anchor Mureed Abbas and Khizar Hayat, the trial has finally entered its concluding phase. During a hearing held at the Karachi Additional District and Sessions Court within the Central Jail Complex, the prosecution recorded the statement of its final witness, Investigating Officer (IO) Atiq-ur-Rehman.
Court Proceedings and Evidence The IO testified that the investigation was handed over to him shortly after the incident, during which he oversaw the recovery of the murder weapon and the collection of CCTV footage. He further confirmed that the identification parade of the accused was conducted and Section 164 statements of the witnesses were successfully recorded. All forensic reports and the formal charge sheet (Challan) have been duly submitted as part of the judicial record.
Case Background and Status The tragedy dates back to 2019, when Mureed Abbas and Khizar Hayat were gunned down over a financial dispute. While the primary accused, Atif Zaman, remains behind bars facing trial, his accomplice Adil Zaman fled in 2020 after his bail was rejected and remains a fugitive. The court has now scheduled the cross-examination of the Investigating Officer by the defense counsel and adjourned the hearing until February 18.
