KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has lashed out at senior players following Pakistan’s disappointing defeat against India in the T20 World Cup, suggesting that it is time to bench big names in favor of fresh talent. Speaking to a private media outlet after the high-voltage clash in Colombo, Afridi expressed his frustration over the consistent failure of senior pros. “If the decision were mine, I would sit Shaheen, Babar, and Shadab out for the next match against Namibia,” Afridi stated.
Afridi emphasized that the team management should provide opportunities to youngsters to build their confidence, rather than sticking with seniors who fail to deliver in crunch moments. He remarked that fans have been watching these same players for a long time, and if seniors cannot perform when the team needs them most, then the juniors waiting on the bench deserve a chance. Despite Shaheen’s pace, Abrar’s mystery, and Shadab’s experience, Pakistan failed to contain India, leading to a “shameful” defeat as per the former captain’s assessment.
The former star all-rounder also highlighted systemic issues within Pakistan cricket. He stressed that without a strong domestic structure, skill development, and proper grooming of players, the results would remain inconsistent. “Until we invest money into domestic cricket and establish academies in every city, we will stay exactly where we are,” Afridi remarked.
India secured a dominant 61-run victory over Pakistan in Colombo, marking their third consecutive win in the group stage. With this win, India’s head-to-head superiority over Pakistan in ICC T20 World Cup events has extended to an impressive 8-1.
