DHAKA: Tensions escalated in Bangladesh’s Sherpur district as a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana Reza-ul-Karim, lost his life following a violent clash between activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami during an election campaign event.
The altercation occurred in the Sherpur-3 constituency during a ceremony organized for candidates to present their election manifestos. According to reports, a dispute over seating arrangements quickly turned into a physical confrontation between the two groups. Maulana Reza-ul-Karim, who served as the Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Sreebardi Upazila unit and was an Arabic lecturer at the Fatehpuri Fazil Madrasa, sustained critical injuries during the brawl.
He was being rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital but succumbed to his injuries en route. Jamaat-e-Islami has officially blamed BNP activists for the violence. In a statement, the party claimed that over 50 of its workers were injured in the clash, with three currently in critical condition.
